NATURAL KILLER CELLS

What are Natural Killer (NK) Cells?

Natural Killer (NK) cells are immune cells that are active in our innate immune system, this means they are able to respond to a wide variety of diseases in a short amount of time. NK cells have the ability to control viral infection as well as detect and control any early signs of cancer. Natural Killer cells are able to kill cancer cells without any previous priming from our adaptive immune system. This makes these cells incredibly valuable to our immune system. NK cells have the ability to also enhance the response of other immune cells causing a strong immune response to fight the infected cells. NK cells release cytotoxic molecules which leads to the breakdown of the infectious cell, leading to its death.

NK cell therapy is generally recommended to individual with a history of cancer, family member with a history of cancer and individuals with any life style choices, such as smoking, that might contribute to cancerous cell growth.
